General radon questions

Radon testing process

Radon testing for homebuyers

Yes. A radon test during the inspection period gives you documented information about indoor air conditions before you take ownership. It is one of the most straightforward tests to add to an inspection.

Radon testing for home sellers

Pre-listing testing gives sellers documented information about their home before buyers request it. If the result is low, that can be a positive disclosure. If it is elevated, sellers have time to plan ahead of the transaction.

The EPA recommends that all homes be tested for radon and that action be taken when the long-term average reaches or exceeds 4 pCi/L. The EPA also suggests homeowners consider action between 2 and 4 pCi/L.

Results & interpretation

In the United States, indoor radon is reported in picocuries per liter of air (pCi/L). Elsewhere it is often reported in becquerels per cubic meter (Bq/m³). 1 pCi/L is approximately 37 Bq/m³.

Radon in new construction

Yes, new homes can have radon. Radon enters from the ground, and any home built on soil or bedrock that can generate radon can measure elevated levels regardless of when it was built.

Commercial & other buildings

Radon can accumulate in commercial buildings, particularly on lower floors. Schools, daycare centers, offices with basement space, and similar buildings are reasonable candidates for testing.
